INSPECTION OF THE TAILPLANE ATTACHMENT FITTING
Applicable to all the Schneider ES-49, ES-52 and Grunau gliders with similar attachment / mounting bolt structures as the ES-49. During the inspection of a ES-49 glider, the vertical bolt on the tailplane attachment fitting was found to be so badly cracked that the bolt actually broke in two during handling. Following an ES-49 incident, a telegram was sent to ES-49 operators requiring a mandatory inspection before the next flight. All gliders where tailplanes are secured in this manner are subject to this directive.
