STARTER RING GEAR INSPECTION / REPLACEMENT
Experience has shown that cracking can occur in the zinc coated starter ring gears as fitted to Solo 2625-01 and 2625-02 engines. It is thought that this occurs as a result of hydrogen embrittlement caused by the planting process. Accordingly, regular inspections are now mandated to detect this damage. The EASA has produced AD 2009-0169-E; DG-Flugzeugbau has issued Technical Note (TN) 800-36/843-30 for DG-800 B and DG-500 MB sailplanes fitted with zinc coated starter ring gears. TN 800-36/843-30 forms part of this Airworthiness Directive.
